Summer News

Now the shop is up and running it’s time for a quick update! Since Afterglow opened in June, things have been very busy. I’m so lucky to have many talented designers on board so the shop is always colourful with lots of new things to see. Everyone is working hard to develop new products or source unique items that the visitors to Olney seem to like!

We have had big successes like the beautifully restored Gothic Revival chair which was here less than 24 hours before it sold, only to be replaced by a lovely bureau that lasted a full 2 days before it too was snapped up!

Awareness of the shop has been building thanks in part to a couple of full page features in MK Pulse and Phonebox magazine.

I have been busy keeping up with orders and have been making decoupage guitars and clocks on themes ranging from Elvis to One Direction! It’s great to get people’s wish lists of bands and to make them a reality!

Overall I am just loving the fact that all our designer-makers are gaining appreciation for what they do.

Decoupage guitars

At the MK Handmade & Vintage Extravaganza in May, we were delighted with the response to our first decoupage guitars. Two acoustic guitars were transformed into uniquely decorated pieces of art, whilst still functioning as musical instruments.  With one themed ‘Beatles’ and the other ‘Rolling Stones’, the guitars each sold to people who spotted them as unusual presents for friends who loved the bands.  So for September’s fair we’ll be back in MK with more guitars among the cake stands, cosies candles and furniture!

Save Our Teapots

Serve your tea in style with our Union Jack tea cosy

According to Debenhams, the great British tradition of drinking tea is under threat – sales of teapots are sinking, while mugs are flying off the shelves.

We’re pleased to hear that the department store is fighting back by launching a Campaign for Civilised Tea Drinking, where the five million cups of tea sold in its restaurants each year will be served in teapots, with a cup and saucer.

Meanwhile, other stories in the news show that the British love of a nice cup of tea is not lost.  Designer Ali Miller, has been inundated with orders after her teapot was recently featured in an episode of the BBC drama Sherlock.

Whether you’re a fan of proper tea from a teapot or a new convert to civilised tea drinking, we’ve got a range of cosies that will keep your tea piping hot.  Made from wool rich yarn and fully lined, it’s the perfect way to save our teapots.
