Handcrafted Vintage Upcycled

About Us

Afterglow is owned by designer-maker Diana Harris and opened in June 2014.

The shop features forgotten or unloved items which have been ‘upcycled’ using decoupage, specialist paint and fabric to create new designs as well as artisan-crafted jewellery and homewares and vintage and retro gifts and accessories.

Diana’s work is complemented by other designers and artists, local to the area, each handpicked for their individual style and creativity.

Diana is a former journalist and ITV press officer, who started her small vintage-inspired business while bringing up her four daughters.
Diana says: “Opening Afterglow in Olney was a dream come true and followed three years of exhibiting at handmade and vintage fairs and in other people’s shops. Afterglow is a colourful, vibrant place which I hope customers will want to visit time and again because there’s always something new to see".

“Old furniture and vintage finds still have plenty to offer to us today. With a bit of care and creativity, they can be brought back to life or made into something new and unique to be enjoyed by a new generation, rather than consigned to landfill".
Adds Diana: “I often feature song lyrics or punchy quotes in my own work and I like to feel the item’s character before deciding what to do. The result is something original which you won’t find anywhere else.”
In keeping with the ethos of Afterglow, the shop has bespoke signs created by Russell Thomas of RJ Thomas Traditional Signwriting, a company based in East Haddon, Northamptonshire, which has specialised in designing and hand-painting period signs for nearly 40 years and is now one of the few remaining traditional sign-writing companies in the UK.

We are located in the historic market town of Olney, world-famous for its pancake race and for hymnwriter John Newton, who wrote Amazing Grace. The town has a thriving network of independent shops, a museum and is surrounded by beautiful countryside, making it a great day out.
